Measuring PTSD recovery

Veterans often tell us ‘Combat Stress changed my life’ but as well as veterans telling us this, it is important that we collect clinical data to demonstrate this.

Following the introduction of our Quality and Effectiveness Data (QED) system, we can now quantify that in real terms.

Feedback from service users can be very challenging to collect and typically in mental healthcare services this is undertaken using paper questionnaires. This is time consuming and difficult to collate and report.

As a result, it is not uncommon for mental health services to not report their outcomes on a routine basis.

Our primary aim for veterans who seek our help is for them to recover from PTSD.

The data shows that on average 70% of those who undertake our treatment recover, meaning they no longer meet the clinical criteria for PTSD. This is an incredible impact and it is significantly above the recovery rate for PTSD of other mental health services.

Clinical data collection

Clinical data helps us to deliver effective, high-quality mental healthcare to veterans as it shows us what is working. QED allows veterans to self-report their symptoms using robust, approved clinical measures and share feedback on treatment at Combat Stress.

This helps us ensure our programmes stay effective and relevant and helps us to continually improve our services. The data we collect covers satisfaction with our service, clinical change and veteran reported improvements to their mental health.

Another benefit of QED is our ability to share data with a veteran during treatment - this is impactful and means clinicians, in partnership with veterans, can adjust and refine treatment plans during treatment. It is also very motivating for a veteran’s recovery journey.

The data clearly demonstrates the difference our treatment makes to most veterans. But for those where the difference isn’t so clearly seen, we use information collected to adjust their treatment plan as required to ensure that they are supported as effectively as possible towards recovery.

The difference our treatment makes

PTSD can overwhelm someone’s life.

But our evidence-based treatment enables veterans to shift from living with the debilitating effect of PTSD to moving on with their lives. After our treatment, many veterans tell us ‘I feel like I did before I developed PTSD’.

They may still be dealing with other issues but the impact of PTSD on their day-to-day life has been vastly reduced.

Our data from QED demonstrates the impact our treatment can make – most veterans recover because of our specialist treatment.
