Combat Stress calls for PM contenders
to sign Veterans' Pledge

Combat Stress is calling for Boris Johnson and Jeremy Hunt to sign The Sun's new Veterans’ Pledge, ensuring UK veterans receive the support and treatment they need.

The Sun's campaign wants the leadership candidates to promise that whoever becomes Prime Minister will:

  • Create a separate veterans department for the first time to coordinate veterans’ needs across Whitehall
  • Enshrine the Military Covenant into law to allow veterans and bereaved families to hold the government to account
  • Pass new legislation to end unfair and repeated investigations into historical allegations before the next General Election

Combat Stress Chief Executive Sue Freeth said:

“The veterans we treat struggle with the legacy of war long after conflict has ended. Mental health conditions such as post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, anxiety, substance misuse and anger not only have devastating effects on veterans but on their loved ones as well.

“More can be done by the government to recognise the needs of former servicemen and women. This includes substantial long-term funding for issues faced by veterans and their families; making a serious commitment to the military covenant by enshrining the Armed Forces Covenant into law; and ensuring those veterans affected by investigations into historical allegations – whether called as a witness or accused – are supported.

“This is why Combat Stress calls on the leadership candidates to sign the Veterans’ Pledge.”
