Myths about PTSD and veterans
Combat Stress is the UK’s leading charity for veterans’ mental health. To help increase understanding about PTSD, the team at the charity want to dispel some of the common myths about this mental health condition and veterans:
Myth number one: PTSD is a sign of weakness. This is simply not true. PTSD is a perfectly normal response to highly distressing events that overwhelm our nervous system's ability to cope.
Myth number two: PTSD only comes from frontline combat. This is also not true. PTSD can come from events such as an accident or bullying, or even losing a close friend.
Myth number three: PTSD is immediate. PTSD often doesn't come immediately after the event. It can actually surface after many months or even years. And that's why early help is so key.
Myth number four: If I ignore PTSD, it will go away. Unfortunately, if we ignore PTSD, it will not go away. It often increases in symptoms over time. And again, that's why early help is so key.
Myth number five: PTSD is permanent. The team at Combat Stress can absolutely tell you that PTSD is not permanent. With the right support and interventions, there is hope for recovery.
