Combat Stress’ innovative treatment discussed at European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies Conference

Latest Stories

Last week, at the biennial conference of the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS) in Belfast, our clinicians presented papers on how Combat Stress is innovating in its approaches to treat veterans with PTSD.

Narrative Exposure Therapy is a psychological therapy for PTSD that uses the power of storytelling to help a person heal from their past experiences. The process involves creating a chronological narrative of life events, integrating all experiences from the traumatic to the positive. This therapy is unique in its focus on creating an account of what happened through the entire life of a person in a way that serves to restore their self-respect and is an effective treatment for PTSD.

At the ESTSS conference in Belfast, our clinicians also spoke about:

  • how Combat Stress is constantly striving to be on the cutting edge of treatment for veterans with PTSD and Complex-PTSD and included papers on our intensive treatment service for veterans
  • the use of Compassion-focused Therapy for veterans with high levels of self-criticism and shame
  • our Peer Support and Family Support services.

What is the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies?

The ESTSS was set up to promote the sharing of knowledge and experience about the study of psychological trauma, specifically, reading, treating, preventing, and researching traumatic situations and peoples’ reactions to them.

Professor Dominic Murphy, our Head of Research and President of the UK Psychological Trauma Society, was the Co-chair of this conference, with over 500 international attendees.
