Supporting Veterans Through the Holidays

Christmas and New Year can be a particularly difficult time for those without strong support networks, or who are experiencing loneliness. Loneliness is an emotional experience communicating to us that something important (often a connection) is missing. Many things can lead to loneliness, including bereavement, relationship break-ups or relocation.

While anyone can experience loneliness, veterans may be at greater risk due to the transition from military to civilian life, which can lead to loss of personal connections and a shift in sense of self. We know that loneliness can have a significant effect on our physical and mental health, including a higher risk of depression, poor sleep and alcohol misuse.

A study conducted by The Combat Stress Centre for Applied Military Health Research explored the wellbeing and mental health of treatment-seeking UK veterans and found that 79% of veterans studied reported symptoms of loneliness.

We want every veteran to know they’re not alone during this period, and that our team is here to listen and provide confidential advice and support. If you’re a veteran or a loved one, please call our free, 24-hour Helpline on 0800 138 1619 to speak with our team.
