National Grid employees raise over £5000 in aid of veterans’ mental health
Members of National Grid’s Veterans Employee Resource Group (VERG) were joined by colleagues across the company a few months ago to undertake a 24-hour ‘spin-athon’ to mark PTSD Awareness Day and raise funds for Combat Stress.
By the end of the challenge they had achieved a staggering distance of 2,060km and raised £5,118.78!
The VERG was set up to provide growth and professional development opportunities for military veterans within National Grid.
David Welling, UK Vice Chair of the Veteran’s VERG, said: “As a relatively new ERG, we set ourselves a small target and really just wanted to start a conversation and raise awareness of PTSD. We were totally overwhelmed by the support we received and how many people came along to find out more about what we do, or reached out to ask for help and support for either themselves or someone they know struggling with mental health or transitioning out of the Armed Forces. The event was such a success that it’s spurred us on to do more.”
Robert Marsh, Director of Fundraising at Combat Stress, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to National Grid and their Veterans Employee Resource Group for selflessly dedicating their time to raise funds to help us to make a difference to the lives of veterans in need of our specialist treatment and support.
“It’s also great to see National Grid generating conversations around veterans’ mental health, as well as providing veterans with the support they need to have successful civilian careers, bringing their enormous value to the workplace.”
